Wood & fiber comprise some of the natural raw material the artisan carve and weave into their creations.
UNIQUE FIBER PRODUCTS
Palm [palma] vegetable fiber is used in a great variety of crafts, however, one product stand out from the rest – hats. Each region creates a version distinguished from the rest in materials, shape and size. Michoacan communities known for hat-making are Jaracuaro, Zacan and Uren. Uren is located in an area known as Canada de los Once Pueblos [Glen of Eleven Towns]
Hatband and linings are found in Patzcuaro, Urupan and Morelia. Other object ranging from purses to folders and tortilla baskets can also be found.In Santa Cruz Tanaco and Tarecuato, strong knapsacks and bags re woven with maguey fiber…commonly called ‘pita’ or ‘mizcalli.’
From time immemorial, the artisans of the Lake Patzcuaro region have made diverse objects from the tule and chuspata fiber. These are a variety of of the bulrush. Family workshops create a variety of products. Bedrolls. Baskets. Purses. Tablecloths. Tortilla baskets. Floor coverings. Also, birds and decorative figures representing images of daily life are created throughout the Michoacan region.
